This record group consists of bound compilations of the special orders issued by the Adjutant General of Michigan from 1916 to 1935. Col. John S. Bersey held the office during this entire time period and most orders bear his signature. Generally, they concern personnel matters, such as transfers, promotions, assignments, assumptions of command and discharges. The World War I era is represented in this series, and typical orders from this time document reassignments to the U.S. regular armed forces, discharges due to dependents and special training assignments.

Michigan's military establishment formally began with an August 30, 1805 act that provided for a territorial militia. A state militia was established in 1838.
